Most people who get involved in internet marketing fall for the trap of trying to compete in the make money niche, which is the most competitive and hardest niche of all to compete in.

Not only are you up against heavyweights like Mike Filsaime, Frank Kern and Alex Goad, you’re also competing against a bunch of crooked “make money while you sleep” programs that are solely designed to make the owner rich.

It is an incredibly competitive market – a market that eats most alive.

The statistic that 95% of Internet marketers fail is liberally quoted by many people, but closer analysis of the statistic is worth undertaking.

It’s almost certain that 100% of people who buy into a MLM or one up program or something totally illegal like a cash gifting program or HYIP without any prior knowledge or skill will fail.

And I think that a fair proportion of people who say that they own and run an Internet Marketing business fall into that category, when in actual fact they own nothing.

But people who take the time to actually learn the basics like web-hosting, follow up and copywriting have a far higher success rate.

Those that take it one step further and apply the basics of net-marketing  to something that they already know about have an even higher success rate.

Yesterday, according to seobook (very handy tool – free to join) there were an estimated 7229 searches made for the TOP 2 keyword phrases for guitar hero.  On the same day for the TOP 4 keyword phrases associated with the phrase Make Money online, there were 7383 searches( and the fourth one was probably useless – because it was make Money online free)

Now, both of them, as you would expect, are highly competitive keyword terms, but a little digging in the guitar hero niche will reveal some highly searched but less competitive keywords.  There is no such luck with make money online.

You still need content and unless you’re passionate about playing guitar hero, it may be difficult to find unless you have  something like Alex Goad’s autocontent generator.

Let’s cut to the chase.

Most product launches go over old territory.  Clickbank, adwords, adsense, cpa offers.

They all include screen shots, and “video proof “of their successes.

None of them tell you that these guys have probably worked their butts off for years to get the level of success that they claim to have.  None of them say how much money they spend on Google Adwords.  None of them say how many staff they have working for them.

How many people work for Mike Filsaime for example?

Do you think he sits at home by himself and has these wonderful ideas that he diligently writes the program for, then produces the product, writes the sales copy, prepares the launch material and buys the traffic.

If you do, then it’s time to wake up and smell the coffee.

I have nothing against Mike, he’s a great marketer with some good products, but his business is so upscale that you can’t hope to emulate him unless you’re prepared to upscale like him and to take the risks that he undoubtedly took.

Nothing is easy.  It takes work, time, patience and research and frankly none of it is overly sexy (apart from when the cheques come in)

Yes there are good product launches that come along, I have reviewed several over the past 12 months.

Yes there are innovative ideas and techniques that people employ, but simply copying and pasting the published methods of an alleged guru along with the thousand or so others doing exactly the same thing won’t cut the mustard.

And here’s something else that these guru’s do time and again.

They get you in for $47, $77 or $97 and then they say look you’ll earn a little bit doing this but if you want to supercharge your efforts you need access to my inner circle and it costs (normally on a monthly basis)

And here’s what really gets up my nose with these “Adwords champions” at some point they’re going to spill the beans and say they learned everything they know from Perry Marshall.

The same book that I read once every couple of months.
The same book that has taught me more about marketing than any other.
The same Perry Marshall who’s emails I look forward to every week.

These guys know no more than I do about Adwords.

Google has at one stroke destroyed the livelihood of countless internet marketers who have honestly gone about their business setting up affiliate review sites.  Some of these are garbage, I know, but some are really comprehensive and have done a lot of hard yards researching and recommending products.

Google has arbitrarily slapped all Google adwords advertisers who are running review sites.  There’s no rhyme or reason.  They do it because they can.  Yes some review sites are tacky and dishonest, I agree and have no problem with that, and I’m sure that Google’s intentions are good in this matter, but they are killing off livelihoods because they want some utopian search engine experience.

I don’t like Google, I think that they’re arrogant, bloody  minded, and completely profit driven.  They’re allowed to be – they have a monopoly and I regard them as a necessary evil.

Let’s take the Adsense mechanism as an example of what I mean.

Google Adsense is theoretically a great way for bloggers and website owners to earn income.  You just place a little bit of code on your site and when somebody clicks on the ad you earn some money.

Of course there are terms and conditions, you can’t advertise that site on a Traffic Exchange,an  unusually high click through rate attracts suspicion, you can’t click on your own ads  etcetera.  And if Google determines in its wisdom that you are abusing their terms and conditions they’ll ban you for life, no please explain, no warning,  your gone mate.

Now they could program the code so that it’s only displayed when a search is conducted – I know they could because a competitor by the name of Chitika does.  They don’t because they’re either too lazy or it suits their business model to crush the little guy.

So what should you do if you have affiliate marketing review sites and you rely upon Pay Per Click marketing

I would do several things

First off I would visit Alex Goad’s site at Frontier marketing  and listen to the interview he conducted with Glenn Livingstone, owner of Rocket Clicks ( a pay per click management company)

Secondly I would take a reall good look at  Perry Marshalls website now and get some expert training from an adwords professional – yuo either want to use adwords or you don’t.  If you’re going to be competitive you need expert help.

Thirdly I’d start to investigate alternatives.

OK, I’ve been playing around with Google Cash Detective and I could easily gush about what a great tool it is and how you will make oodles of cash, but in reality any tool is only as good as it’s owner and is only good for what it is designed to do.

Pay Per Click Advertising – the gurus make it sound so simple, promising instant riches – all you need to do is post a couple of ads and voila! you’ll have cash flowing into your account.

But in reality it isn’t that simple. In reality you can lose your shirt, and nobody will give a continental. The Google advertising machine will roll relentlessly on rewarding an elite 5% while 95% try it, fail at it and move on disenchanted.

So how do you get in that 5%, well the cold hard reality is that you need to learn and the only real way to learn is to get your feet wet and that can be an incredibly expensive exercise.

But you can stack the odds a little in your favor and cut out maybe three months of hard yards and lost money by learning from an expert.

There are lots of people out there that claim to have the whole thing licked and will dazzle you with impressive screen shots and videos showing you how easy the whole thing is, but they really will only show you the good stuff and not the hours of hard work that goes in to creating a successful PPC campaign.

For what it’s worth most of these courses will tell you to do the following

1/Do Your research – put in some hard yards looking for profitable and hot niches that have untapped potential. This seems easy enough, but in truth is extremely difficult. I know that I spent a whole day last week researching a promising source and in the end had to pull the plug because I just couldn’t seem to find the right angle or a way to make it pay. It was a frustrating day.

2/Start with many keywords, group them in small ad groups and discard the unprofitable ones

3/Split test your ads

4/Track everything

5/Constantly refine your campaign -build your own landing pages, check out the opposition

It works with time and practice, but it’s hard work.

Now to complicate matters for the novice marketer there are some fairly ingenious software coming on to the market that “assists” the marketer to make money.

The first of these was released in the much hyped Clickbank Code released by Michael Jones, I say much hyped because the sales copy was extreme and frankly put me off, but one interesting thing about the product that made me take a second look was a nifty piece of software that could advise me whether a Clickbank promotion was likely to be profitable before I started – I nearly went back and bought in right then, but was distracted by another piece of software that caught my eye on the same day which claimed to do much the same thing but without he hype – a product called Affiliate Prophet.

This looked the goods to me and I had made up my mind to buy it when I discovered PPC Bully.

PPC Bully is an incredible piece of software that takes the hours of research and drudgery out of PPC marketing by effectively allowing you to spy on your competitor’s best performing campaigns and keywords and structuring a campaign that will mirror and even improve on theirs.

The concept of stealing from your competitors is not knew and has been openly  advocated by many different PPC gurus and eBooks for as long as I can remember – but is it ethical?

Now I have to confess that I’m uncomfortable about this.  I  believe in the free  market, but I also believe in fair play and I wonder about how I would feel if my campaign was effectively ripped off of me by some upstart with a cool piece of software.  A campaign that I had done the hard way and invested countless hours and dollars to make successful.

But the simple fact is that to seriously compete with the big boys I need some serious software and while Affiliate Prophet and the software offered by the Clickbank Code will certainly help my business, the simple fact is that PPC Bully could blow  me out of the water and for that reason i feel almost compelled to buy it.  Your thoughts on these matters would be appreciated.
